What is Root Canal Treatment?
The "pulp" is the collection of blood vessels and nerves inside the tooth. When decay reaches this tissue, severe pain and infection begin. Root canal treatment involves removing this infected tissue, shaping the canals, and sealing them to the root tip. The primary goal is to treat and save the tooth instead of extracting it.
When is it Necessary? The following symptoms may indicate that you need a root canal:
-
Severe, throbbing pain that wakes you up at night.
-
Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold foods.
-
Swelling in the gums, pimple-like bumps (fistula), or discoloration.
-
Pain when chewing or touching the tooth.
Treatment Process at AEG Clinic Don't worry; thanks to modern anesthesia techniques, root canal treatment is as painless and comfortable as a simple filling.
-
Examination: The extent of infection and canal structure are detected with digital X-rays.
-
Anesthesia: The area is completely numbed with local anesthesia; you will feel no pain during the procedure.
-
Cleaning: Decay and infected nerve tissue inside the tooth are meticulously cleaned using special rotary instruments.
-
Filling: The canals are disinfected and sealed with biocompatible materials.
-
Restoration: Depending on the tooth structure, a filling or porcelain crown is applied to restore the tooth's aesthetics and function.
How Long Does it Take? Depending on the infection, treatment is usually completed in a single visit (approx. 45-60 minutes). However, in cases of severe infection, your doctor may plan a 2-visit treatment.
Aftercare: What to Do After Treatment?
For a successful recovery, please pay attention to the following:
- Until Numbness Wears Off: Do not eat until the effect of local anesthesia wears off (approx. 2-4 hours) to avoid biting your tongue or lip.
- Temporary Filling: If your treatment requires two visits, avoid chewing hard foods (nuts, gum) on that side while the temporary filling is in place.
- Pain Control: Mild sensitivity for a few days is normal. You can use painkillers prescribed by your doctor.
