What are Jaw Issues?
Orthodontic problems are not limited to the alignment of teeth. In some cases, the position of the upper or lower jaw bone may be incorrect (Skeletal Issues). If the lower jaw is too far forward (prognathia) or too far back (retrognathia), it affects both facial aesthetics and chewing/speaking functions.
What are the Treatment Methods? At AEG Clinic, two different paths are followed depending on the patient's age and the severity of the problem:
-
In Children (Growth Phase): In children whose jaw development is not yet complete, jaw growth can be guided using "Functional Appliances" (removable expanders, etc.). Jaw discrepancies can often be resolved non-surgically during this period.
-
In Adults (Growth Complete): Since skeletal development is finished, braces alone may be insufficient. In these cases, orthodontic treatment (braces/aligners) is combined with "Orthognathic Surgery." First, the teeth are aligned, and then the jaws are moved to the ideal position by a surgeon.
TMJ (Jaw Joint) Treatments Joint problems such as teeth grinding (bruxism), clicking sounds from the jaw, or pain also fall within the field of orthodontics. Joint health is protected with night guards (splints) and botox applications.
